TAMING THE TONGUE

James 1: 26 (NIV) "If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless."

Proverbs 13:3 (NIV) "He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin."

Its difficult to control the tongue. If left uncontrolled, it can ruin lives. As one fruit of the Holy spirit is self control, this also pertains to controlling ones tongue.

CHARACTERISTICS OF AN UNCONTROLLED TONGUE

It can hurt people and its difficult to get the words back.
  • Deceit (Proverbs 15:4) Paano nandadaya ng dila?
  • Lies (Proverbs 12: 19 / 6: 16-17) - describe lies. Why do we lie?
  • Flattery (Proverbs 28: 23) - bakit ba kailangan pang mambola?

HOW TO TAME THE TONGUE?

  1. Accountability to God (Matthew 12:36) - God hears every word!
  2. Prayers (Psalm 19: 14) - commit both heart and mouth to God daily. Ask if what will be said will be pleasing to God.
  3. Heart Full of God’s Word (Matthew 12: 34, 35) - there is a connection between heart and mouth! God’s word should be placed in the heart to come out of the mouth.
  4. Listen before Speak (James 1: 19) - remember we gave two ears to listen. Don’t speak immediately.
  5. Speak Life (Proverbs 18: 21) - make sure that every word will strengthen people and give them hope.
